The elevated esplanade between the two wings of the Palais de Chaillot is the principal viewpoint. From here, stairs descend through the Jardins du Trocadéro toward Pont d’Iéna and the Eiffel Tower.

Trocadéro is one of those Paris places where the urban composition itself is the attraction.

The Eiffel Tower stands directly across the Seine, while the two sweeping wings of the Palais de Chaillot open toward it like a monumental frame.

From the upper terrace, the eye travels down through the gardens and fountains, across Pont d’Iéna and toward the tower and Champ de Mars beyond.

It is this combination of elevation, symmetry and distance that creates the famous perspective — not simply the fact that the Eiffel Tower is visible.

The present Palais de Chaillot was created for the 1937 International Exposition, replacing the older Palais du Trocadéro built for the 1878 exposition.

Its two monumental wings curve away from the central esplanade, deliberately leaving the Eiffel Tower visible between them.

Below, the Jardins du Trocadéro extend toward the Seine around the large Warsaw Fountain and its basins, sculptures, lawns and pathways.

Rather than staying only on the upper terrace, walk down through the gardens. The changing elevation creates very different views of both the Eiffel Tower and Palais de Chaillot.

Trocadéro is also one of Paris’s strongest cultural clusters, with several major institutions housed within the Palais de Chaillot.

There is no single “correct” Trocadéro view. The perspective changes considerably as you descend.

• Upper esplanade – the classic elevated Eiffel Tower composition and strongest sense of symmetry.
• Palais de Chaillot terraces – use the architecture itself to frame the tower.
• Upper stairs – introduce people, balustrades and changing levels into the foreground.
• Jardins du Trocadéro – a softer view using lawns, trees, sculptures and water.
• Warsaw Fountain – water and the long central axis create one of the most recognisable compositions.
• Pont d’Iéna – turn back toward Chaillot or continue toward the Eiffel Tower for a more street-level perspective.

Early morning generally gives you more space. Around sunset the atmosphere is beautiful but considerably busier.

Trocadéro works particularly well as the beginning of a walk rather than as an isolated photo stop.

• Eiffel Tower – descend through the gardens and cross Pont d’Iéna.
• Champ de Mars – continue behind the Eiffel Tower for another completely different perspective.
• Passy – turn west into one of the 16th arrondissement’s best neighbourhoods for shopping, cafés and everyday Paris.
• Palais de Tokyo – walk east toward Avenue du Président Wilson for contemporary art.
• Musée d’Art Moderne de Paris – immediately beside Palais de Tokyo and excellent for modern art.
• Avenue Kléber – continue north toward the Arc de Triomphe.
• Seine – descend toward the river and continue along the quays.

• Come early for space. Trocadéro is one of Paris’s most photographed locations and becomes very busy during the day.
• Do not stop after taking the classic photograph from the top. The perspective becomes more interesting as you move through the gardens.
• For sunset, arrive before the light begins to change so you can choose your position rather than trying to move through the busiest crowd at the last moment.
• At night, the illuminated Eiffel Tower creates an entirely different atmosphere from the daytime view.
• The esplanade and approaches are heavily visited. As at other major Paris landmarks, keep normal awareness of bags and personal belongings in crowded areas.
• If the weather is poor, turn the visit into a museum day: several major cultural institutions are already inside the Palais de Chaillot.
• For a less tourist-focused continuation, leave the esplanade toward Passy rather than automatically following everyone toward the Eiffel Tower.
