Salon Proust at Ritz Paris – Iconic Afternoon Tea on Place Vendôme

Salon Proust at the Ritz Paris is much more than a traditional afternoon-tea stop. Vintage books, dark wood panelling, deep armchairs and the glow of the fireplace evoke the literary salons associated with Marcel Proust, who was one of the hotel’s most devoted early guests. During the afternoon, Head Pastry Chef Olivier Lainé serves a French interpretation of tea time combining savoury and sweet creations, fine teas, coffee and Champagne. From early evening, the salon changes mood again and becomes an intimate Champagne Bar, making it one of the Ritz’s most atmospheric places to experience Place Vendôme from afternoon into evening.

TLC Paris tip: Think beyond afternoon tea. Arrive for the full tea-time ritual if you want Olivier Lainé’s sweet and savoury experience, but Salon Proust is also interesting later in the day when it takes on the atmosphere of a Champagne bar. The literary setting is part of the experience, so this is one place where it is worth slowing down rather than treating it as a quick pastry stop. Reservations are recommended, and the Ritz asks guests to observe a smart dress code.

Salon Proust – Ritz Paris
15 Place Vendôme
75001 Paris

Set inside the Ritz Paris on Place Vendôme, Salon Proust offers one of the hotel’s most intimate settings for tea, pâtisserie and Champagne.

Place Vendôme One of Paris’s most prestigious historic squares, surrounded by haute joaillerie and luxury maisons.
Nearby Rue Saint-Honoré, Jardin des Tuileries and the Opéra district are all within an easy walk.
Tea Time – The Experience

Salon Proust approaches afternoon tea through a French tea-time tradition rather than simply reproducing a classic English afternoon tea.

Head Pastry Chef Olivier Lainé brings together sweet and savoury creations designed to be enjoyed slowly with tea, coffee and other carefully selected drinks.

Champagne or a non-alcoholic sparkling alternative can make the experience more celebratory, while the salon itself keeps the mood intimate rather than theatrical.

Olivier Lainé & French Pâtisserie

Olivier Lainé, Head Pastry Chef at the Ritz Paris, now shapes the Salon Proust tea-time experience through his interpretation of French pâtisserie and the traditions of the hotel.

Rather than viewing the pastries as an accompaniment to tea, consider them a central part of the experience: flavour, texture, presentation and French pastry technique are all part of what distinguishes Salon Proust.

The selection can evolve with the season, so the experience is worth revisiting rather than treating it as a fixed menu.

Marcel Proust & the Literary Salon

Salon Proust takes its name from Marcel Proust, whose relationship with the Ritz forms part of the hotel’s cultural history.

The room deliberately evokes a private literary salon: book-lined surroundings, wood panelling, comfortable armchairs and subdued light create an atmosphere that feels removed from the activity outside on Place Vendôme.

That sense of retreat is one of the reasons to choose Salon Proust over a more conventional Paris café or tea room.

Champagne Bar – From Afternoon to Evening

Salon Proust does not end with afternoon tea. From 18:00, the room takes on a different identity as an intimate Champagne Bar.

The Ritz presents a selection of Champagnes from prestigious houses alongside more confidential producers, creating a quieter alternative to the atmosphere of a conventional cocktail bar.

It also makes Salon Proust interesting for visitors who want the setting and history of the room without necessarily booking the complete afternoon tea.

Dress Code, Reservations & Occasions

Reservations are recommended for Tea Time, particularly for weekends, celebrations and periods when Paris is especially busy.

The Ritz Paris asks guests to respect an appropriate smart dress code. If in doubt, polished and understated works naturally with the atmosphere of Salon Proust.

The setting works particularly well for birthdays, anniversaries, mother-and-daughter afternoons, romantic visits or simply a more memorable pause during a day in central Paris.

Planning Your Place Vendôme Experience
  • Book ahead when Tea Time is the main reason for your visit.
  • Allow enough time to enjoy the salon rather than fitting it tightly between appointments.
  • Menus, prices and seasonal creations can change, so check the current Ritz Paris page before visiting.
  • For a classic Paris afternoon, combine Salon Proust with Place Vendôme and a walk along Rue Saint-Honoré.
  • Continue toward the Jardin des Tuileries if you want a quieter walk after tea.
  • For an evening experience instead, consider Salon Proust when the room transitions into its Champagne Bar atmosphere.

TLC Paris tip: Salon Proust works beautifully as part of a longer Place Vendôme afternoon: begin with the square and Rue Saint-Honoré, settle into the salon for Tea Time, then walk toward the Tuileries afterwards. Or arrive later and experience the same literary room in its quieter evening role as a Champagne Bar.

TLC Paris Concierge note: Salon Proust now offers two rather different reasons to visit. Choose the afternoon for Olivier Lainé’s French Tea Time and the full pastry-and-tea ritual; come later if Champagne in an intimate Ritz salon is more your style. Reservations are recommended for Tea Time, and a smart dress code applies. You do not need to be staying at the Ritz Paris to enjoy its restaurants and bars.

Salon Proust at Ritz Paris – French Tea Time & Champagne Bar on Place Vendôme

Hidden within the Ritz Paris at 15 Place Vendôme, Salon Proust is an intimate literary-inspired salon created in homage to Marcel Proust, one of the hotel’s most famous regulars. Books, dark wood panelling, deep armchairs and a fireplace give the room the feeling of a private library rather than a conventional hotel restaurant, offering visitors a quieter way to experience one of Paris’s legendary palace hotels.

During the afternoon, Salon Proust is home to the Ritz Paris Tea Time à la française, newly reimagined in September 2026 by Head Pastry Chef Olivier Lainé. Inspired by the five o’clock tea tradition introduced when the Ritz opened in 1898, the experience now unfolds through a sequence of savoury and sweet creations rather than focusing solely on pâtisserie. Tea, coffee, chocolate and Champagne complete a ritual that brings together French pastry tradition and the contemporary identity of the Ritz.

Salon Proust also changes character as the day moves into evening. From 6 pm, the room becomes an intimate Champagne Bar, with a selection of cuvées from leading Champagne houses served in the same library-like surroundings. This makes the salon as relevant for an elegant early-evening drink as it is for afternoon tea — and a particularly atmospheric alternative to Paris’s larger hotel bars.

The connection with Marcel Proust gives the salon another layer beyond food and drink. Proust was a regular presence at the Ritz, where he dined, wrote, entertained and observed the Parisian society that would help shape his literary world. The salon draws on that history without functioning as a museum: it is somewhere to settle into an armchair, slow the pace of the day and experience a more intimate side of the hotel.

Its location in the 1st arrondissement also makes Salon Proust easy to build into a wider day in central Paris. Explore Place Vendôme and Rue de la Paix, browse nearby maisons including Chanel, or continue toward Rue Saint-Honoré. The Jardin des Tuileries and Palais Royal are also within comfortable walking distance.

TLC Paris Concierge: Choose the afternoon if you want the complete French Tea Time experience and Olivier Lainé’s pastry creations; choose early evening if Champagne in a quiet Ritz salon sounds more appealing. You do not need to be staying at the Ritz Paris to visit its restaurants and bars, although reservations are recommended for Tea Time and the hotel’s smart dress code should be kept in mind.
