Rue Visconti

One of the narrow historic streets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Rue Visconti runs between Rue de Seine and Rue Bonaparte in the 6th Arrondissement. Its old façades, intimate proportions and literary history make it a fascinating short detour while exploring the galleries and streets of Saint-Germain.

Honoré de Balzac established his printing business here in the 1820s, at what is now 17 Rue Visconti, before financial difficulties brought that chapter of his career to an end. The street’s history is closely connected with the writers and artists who lived and worked in this part of the Left Bank.

Rue Visconti also sits directly inside the wider Saint-Germain art and gallery district. Step out onto Rue de Seine or Rue Bonaparte and you are immediately surrounded by galleries, antiques, interiors, specialist shops, cafés and restaurants, with Boulevard Saint-Germain and the Seine only a short walk away.

Explore Rue Visconti with TLC Paris for literary history, historic architecture and old Saint-Germain, then continue through the surrounding streets for art, galleries, antiques and design.
